Interning with Marty has been an interesting experience. I actually learned a few life lessons that will certainly come in handy. That sounds a bit corny but it is true. First thing I learned is to try your hardest to never get in trouble with the law. An obvious statement but the hassle and the process of getting through the system to get on with your life is entirely too much trouble. Although, I suppose if everyone stayed out of trouble, Marty would be out of a job.
In all seriousness though, I did learn some things. For example, I observed a meeting with a client I had never met before but she had apparently been a client for some time now. My interning days just never coincided with the days she was in court. I can't talk about the specifics of the case, of course, but after hearing her talk to Marty in preparation for going on the stand to be questioned, even my untrained ears could hear discrepancies in her words. Marty later made a comment about how it was almost funny how he would tell her to do something and she would turn around to do the exact opposite. Almost funny, but not quite, especially after actually hearing her on the stand. Everyone in the court room was suppressing smirks as the prosecutor poked holes in her every sentence. It was painful to watch, honestly. My point is that someone can give you a hand, give you help and point you in the right direction, but it is ultimately up to you to decide whether to accept it. I could even obnoxiously comment that what goes around, comes around. Everything in this life is up to you to decide. Sometimes you get dealt a bad hand, but in the end, it is all about how you choose to respond to it.
That was just the most recent lesson I learned. There are several more but I felt that this was an important one to share. It is not a new lesson or one that I have never heard before but I think seeing it in action made it a little clearer, especially when I see what a bad end looks like.
Looking back over the course of this semester, I realize that this internship came at a good time for me personally and truly helped me figure out the next steps in my life. There was never a distinct moment or even a particular experience that stands out to me but in making the decision about law school, it was a good overall experience to have.
