Thank You Veterans

One of the responsibilities of a Congressman is to maintain contact with his constituents and keep them happy. These two aspects of his duties are the essential responsibilities of district office. The individuals in the office serve as his voice to the constituents as well as the other branches of the government with which they interact. One of the cool things I got to do this semester was draft a thank you letter to all of the attendees of a certain event hosted by the Congressman. While he does not compose all of these letters himself, I think this is a very important aspect of his job. All of these letters bring respect and admiration from the community and also spread the word about the other actions that the Congressman has taken both in his district and in the legislature.
Equally as important are the events that the Congressman puts on. The main event that I have had the opportunity to attend is his Veteran's Day luncheon. This luncheon accomplishes many purposes for a Congressman. First, it shows his respect for the Veterans, who are a widely regarded group of the population, though not the largest. Second, it provided the opportunity for other politicians, such as State Senators, to show their support for the Congressman and his campaign. Third, it provides him with positive spotlight attention. Finally, it gives him a way to rally the people to his cause, which proves effective later both for his sway in Congress and the possibility of reelction.
