The Cohen Culture

The office of Congressman Steve Cohen has a fairly simple organization and purpose, so I would like to focus more on the office environment than just how it operates. As Cohen's district office, it is our job to serve the constituents; we have to help them deal with the various government departments that people have to work with. Often, they have difficulty receiving the assistance that they are entitled to, or simply need help getting a process started. In these cases, the constituent would call into the office, and an intern would transfer them to the appropriate constituent representative. Our mission is to help people deal with the government, hopefully earning their trust and appreciation in the process.
The culture in the office is quite friendly, and is kept that way by the actions of the constituent service representatives who work there. Willie Henry, who works with social security issues, health matters, and homelessness, always has a smile on his face and takes time to say a nice word when an intern passes by. Jordan James, who has to field phone calls regarding education in addition to supervising the intern, is a great guy. He shows legitimate interest in almost everyone in the office, and his cordial discussions really help the office environment to be a positive one. Beyond how people within the office directly act, they also carry out their duties in a considerate way. For example, the intern who is covering phones may be busy and unable to answer a call, in which case Marzie Thomas, who is responsible for VA matters, may pick up the call. If a constituent has a meeting with Marzie, but Marzie is out of the office for some reason, Moniqua would step up and offer to meet with the constituent instead, because she also deals with VA matters. Put simply, the people in the office care about more than their own particular matters. They show genuine interest in helping each other and the constituents, and will always go out of their way to be of assistance. This makes the culture of Cohen's office a very positive one, and an enjoyable place to work.
